cbt-wp.trid.xml for WordPerfect Writing Tools *.CBT *.CBD
« on: July 29, 2022, 10:30:07 PM »
Hello trid users,

some days ago i handled files with name extension CBT. Some examples are
described as "Dan Bricklin's Demo demo (generic)" by dbd-gen.trid.xml with
wrong extension DBD.

But there are dozen of such CBT files which are part of Corel WordPerfect
Office suite. These are found in sub directory WritingTools inside
WordPerfect program directory "c:\Program Files (x86)\Corel\WordPerfect
Office 2021". The file names are like: Wt13cbede.cbt Wt13cbeit.cbt
Wt13cbefr.cbt WT21cbede.cbt Wt13cbeEN.CBD WT21cbeEN.CBD. These start with 2
letter phrase WT followed by digits which corresponds to Word Perfect
version. For version 2021 this digits are 21 and for an older version i
found digits 13. The last capitals obviously correspond to used
language. For English the file name extension is CBD whereas for all other
languages it is CBT.

Unfortunately i found no information especially about file format
specification about such WordPerfect CBT files. So i choose page about
WordPerfect on Wikipedia as reference. That is expressed by line like:
   <RefURL>https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WordPerfect</RefURL>

In the sub directory there exist more similar files but with other file name
extensions like adv, hyd, icr, lex, mor and sav.

The Writing Tools are used for spelling, grammar correction, thesaurus
purpose in chosen language. Unfortunately i do not found for which part the
CBT files are used. So i choose a "general" name for such CBT samples. That
is expressed by line like:
   <FileType>WordPerfect Writing Tools</FileType>

When i run TrID on such examples these are described correct but unspecific
like "WordPerfect (generic)" by definition wp-generic.trid.xml (see appended
output/trid-v-old.txt).

For comparison reason i also run the file utility (version 5.42). This
describes the examples in similar way as "Corel WordPerfect", but with sub
classification as "Unknown filetype 70" and "v1.0" (that is 46 hexadecimal;
see appended output/file-5.42.txt).

For comparison reason i also run the file format identification utility
DROID ( See https://sourceforge.net/projects/droid/). This identifies all
CBT examples wrong as "Comic Book Archive" by PUID fmt/1462 based on file
name extension (See appended droid-cbt-wordperfect.csv)

So i run tridscan on my examples to generate cbt-wp.trid.xml. So we see that
not only the first 4 bytes are the same like \xFFWPC that is generic for all
WordPerfect samples, but also all first 32 bytes are the same. That is
expressed by XML construct like:
 <Bytes>FF57504310000000014601000000000000000000000000000000000000000000</Bytes>
 <ASCII> . W P C . . . . . F</ASCII>
 <Pos>0</Pos>

With the new definition now all my WordPerfect CBT examples are described
more precisely ( see appended output/trid-v-new.txt). TrID definition and
output are stored in archive cbt_WP.zip. I hope that the XML file can be
used in future version of triddefs.

With best wishes
